On 14 April, every year, India celebrates Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary which is popularly known as Ambedkar Jayanti. A celebration of a person’s life and achievements is far greater than a mere ritual. Ambedkar Jayanti reminds us of the equal opportunity, justice and democracy that Dr. Baba Saheb worked for his whole life. While in 2025 these great concepts and thoughts are highly relevant in the context of India’s complex social relations.

Ambedkar’s Legacy People know him as a great economist, a scholar and the principal author of the Indian constitution, but very few know that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was born to a discriminatory society. He was a Dalit, born in a family which deeply faced systemic discrimination.

He was named Dr. Bhim Rao Rapji Ambedkar and had a wide influence in various fields:

  • Social: Abolishment of the Caste system in India.
  • Education: Motivated people towards learning.
  • Constitutional: Contributed to the drafting of the Indian Constitution
  • Women Rights: Advocated for equal share in civil and political rights.

All of these were stepping stones towards building a modern and an inclusive India. Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti is a reminder of the inclusive country that Baba Saheb aspired for and wrought.

In 2025, the commemoration of Ambedkar Jayanti seems to have taken a new turn of zeal and celebration throughout India. From top metropolitan cities to little districts, the public is partaking in commemorative activities that bolden the life of Ambedkar and his lessons.

  1. Mass Gatherings: Lakhs of followers are visiting Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai, the place of Dr. Ambedkar’s cremation.
  2. Educational Campaigns: Prabhat Pheris in different parts of Mumbai and other cities.
  3. Academic Engagement: Several colleges and universities organize orientations and discussions about the significance of Dr. Ambedkar.
  4. Social Drives: Free legal service workshops, donation campaigns, and awareness programs are taking place.

These events are largely celebratory in nature rather than merely ritualistic, and indicate the deepening awareness of the vision Ambedkar had to fight for in regard with eradicating unjust inequalities in the society. On the other hand, Ambedkar Jayanti indicates a public holiday but also an awakening period for the entire country.

Now, social media is filled with quotes from Ambedkar and political groups stating what he believed in, all thanks to the younger generation reading his works. In this light, Ambedkar Jayanti is now an inspiration for both learning and political activism.

Ambedkar Jayanti is a day where people pay respects to his memory by laying down flowers. Tribute, however, lies in practicing his ethos. This implies fighting against casteism in schools and workplaces and even in private residences. This implies demanding educators and frontline workers to uphold the Constitutional mandates and obligations. This entails celebrating difference in opinions, identities, their involvement in society, and more.

At this moment, India is facing a critical inflection point and intersection of advancement and deep-seated inequality which the teachings of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar can illuminate the way out from. In remembering him this year it should be time for a shift away from celebration to their rituals and for a change.
